Valentine Chitalu
Chairman
Valentine is Chairman of Phatisa, MTN (Zambia) and SABMiller (Zambia). He sits on various additional boards. At the Zambia Privatisation Agency, Valentine oversaw the disposal and privatisation of 240 businesses. He was chairman of the Zambia Venture Capital Fund, board member of Commonwealth Africa Investments and Central African Director for CDC Capital Partners.
Duncan Owen
Deputy Chairman
(Mauritius)
Qualified as a chartered accountant and engineer, Duncan was Managing Director of Unilever, Zambia; Business Director – Africa at CDC Capital Partners; and deputy CEO of AFGRI Products. He has completed in excess of 40 change-of-control transactions and has lived and worked in South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana.
Stuart Bradley
Managing Partner
Stuart has > 20 years’ African private equity experience with CDC Capital Partners, Aureos Capital and Phatisa Group, of which he is co-founder. Stuart has successfully raised over US$ 1 billion for private equity funds in Africa. Previously, he was Managing Partner of Aureos Southern Africa Fund and General Manager of Takura Ventures in Zimbabwe.
Robert Jenkins
IC Member – Food Funds
Robert was a founding partner of Phildrew Ventures with five funds of > US$1bn of assets under management; the business was sold to UBS in 2000. Subsequently, he joined Bridgepoint Capital, managing 10 underperforming assets. In Africa, Robert has mentored two SME funds, trustee of a Malawian microfinance business and chairs a grant-making trust. More recently he served as an Investment Director of Gatsby, managing a budget of US$20m and CIO of Msingi, East Africa.
David White
IC Member – Food Funds
David’s main career is an investment banker. He has over 35 years experience at Baring Brothers, JPMorgan and Citigroup, where he was a Managing Director and Head of the Financial Institutions Group. He has had a continuing interest in Africa since doing VSO in Nigeria, and a secondment to Barings affiliate in Lagos. He is a member of the investment committee of Africa Agriculture Fund, and Chairman of Goldenoil Holdings, the vehicle for AAFs palm oil-related investments. He became Chairman of the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund in January 2014.
Yida Kemoli
Senior Partner – East Africa
Yida joined Phatisa from Trans-Century, where he spent six years as Head of Corporate Finance and Strategy. Previously, he worked with JP Morgan, Actis and Aureos. Yida is experienced in investment banking, corporate finance and private equity. Between 2010 and 2013, he was a non-executive director of the Kenya Investment Authority.
Martin Kromat
Senior Partner – Portfolio Operations
Martin previously worked at Diageo, where he held positions of Supply Chain Director, Diageo Southern Africa and Finance Director, Brandhouse Beverages, Diageo’s joint venture with Heineken and Namibia Breweries. He also served as a member of the audit committee and alternate non-executive director of Namibia Breweries. Prior to 2011, Martin was with Procter & Gamble (P&G) where he worked for more than 13 years in several commercially focused and functional finance roles in Europe and Africa, which included finance director for P&G’s eastern and southern African businesses.
Rinolan Moodley
Partner
Rinolan has played a key role in Phatisa’s African Agriculture Fund having deployed over US$ 75 million since he joined Phatisa in 2013. Prior to joining Phatisa, Rinolan was a Manager in PwC’s Deals Division where he worked on several M&A transactions, divestitures and valuations across Africa. He commenced his career at PwC and is a qualified chartered accountant after having spent four years in Johannesburg and Chicago.
Pravisha Rampal
Head of Investor Relations
Pravisha has more than 20 years’ experience in the finance and private equity sectors, having started her career at Mercantile Bank and moving across to Sasfin Bank. She joined Phatisa in 2012 as the admin manager for all funds under management. Her exposure to the fields of consumer, asset, trade and debtor finance, as well as fund administration, holds her in good stead in carrying out her duties as the recently appointed Phatisa Head of Investor Relations.
Eugene Stals
Chief Investment Officer
Eugene is a seasoned private equity and investment professional with deep operational experience. He was a senior partner at Ethos Private Equity in Johannesburg, South Africa. During this time, Eugene was instrumental in the formation of Ethos and the introduction of black economic empowerment to the business. In all, he spent 18 years in executive, board and investment committee capacities at Ethos. Eugene has a successful track record over the whole private equity value chain. More recently fulfilled roles as an executive in, and have consulted to, companies on strategic and operational issues.
Peter Van As
Senior Partner – Portfolio Value Add
(Mauritius)
Peter’s career has focused on emerging markets for multi-nationals, including Dutch dairy, Unilever, Smollan and Diageo. He has served on boards in Africa and North America. At Unilever, Peter worked in developing markets in eastern, central and southern Africa. He specialises in setting up businesses, establishing go-to-market systems and processes.
